Case Study: Top-to-Bottom Comfort for a Massive Horse Barn in Almonte, ON

It all started with a free inspection.

What the client needed was simple on paper: a fully insulated horse barn, ready for year-round use. But when we got on site in Almonte, we knew this wasn’t going to be your average insulation job.

We’re talking big. High ceilings, wide-open spaces, and specialized areas like the tack room and lunging ring — all needing different insulation specs to keep animals comfortable, equipment protected, and energy bills in check.

This kind of job has to be done right the first time. And that’s exactly what we set out to do.

With a clear plan, the right gear, and a sharp eye on quality every step of the way, our team at Panda Insulation delivered a smooth, on-time, on-budget project — and a space that’s now built to perform in every season.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how we pulled it off.

Project Overview

Client: Private Equestrian Facility
Location: Almonte, Ontario
Project Scope: Full insulation of horse barn, including stable roof, exterior walls, aisle & lunging ring roof, interior walls, and tack room ceiling.

What started with a free inspection and estimate quickly grew into one of Panda Insulation’s largest agricultural projects to date — a state-of-the-art horse barn in Almonte, Ontario.

With high ceilings, expansive wall space, and specialized areas like the tack room and lunging ring, this project required precision, consistency, and tight coordination to deliver both quality and efficiency. Our goal: create a warm, energy-efficient, and safe environment for horses, riders, and staff alike.

The Need: Protecting Animals, Equipment & Year-Round Operations

In agricultural environments, insulation is not a luxury — it’s a necessity. This barn was designed to operate year-round, housing valuable horses and sensitive equipment, including saddles, tack, feed, and veterinary supplies. Without proper insulation, the building would be vulnerable to:

  • Freezing winter temperatures, creating discomfort and health risks for the animals.
  • Excessive humidity, leading to condensation, mold, and corrosion of metal fixtures.
  • Temperature swings, which can damage expensive leather goods and feed stored in the tack room.
  • Skyrocketing energy costs from trying to heat or cool an unsealed structure.

It was essential that we deliver the project to spec, ensuring proper R-values in each area of the barn to maintain stable indoor conditions regardless of the season.

Scope of Work

The barn’s size and design demanded a comprehensive insulation strategy, including:

  • Stable Roof
  • Exterior Walls
  • Aisle & Lunging Ring Roof
  • Interior Walls — Spray Foam Insulation (R22), over 746 sq. ft.
  • Tack Room Ceiling — Spray Foam Insulation (R31), 291 sq. ft.

Spray foam was selected for its superior thermal performance, complete air-sealing capability, and moisture resistance — all vital for agricultural buildings exposed to Ontario’s unpredictable climate.

Execution & Process

Consistency is key for a project of this scale. From day one, our team established clear processes to stay on track and maintain high standards:

  • Daily Work Records from every spray foam installer
  • Daily Reporting & Photos from our site supervisors to track progress and quality
  • Client Walkthroughs at critical stages to catch minor details early, avoiding surprises at the end

The barn’s towering ceilings presented a unique challenge, but our team came fully prepared with the right equipment and a carefully developed game plan. Safety protocols were followed meticulously, and all materials were delivered on time to maintain momentum throughout the job.

Results

On Time, On Budget: Thanks to careful planning and rigorous daily checks, the project was completed as scheduled, without cost overruns.

Comfort & Efficiency: The barn now boasts year-round insulation, helping maintain a stable temperature inside — crucial for animal welfare, staff comfort, and equipment protection.

Client Satisfaction: Through regular updates and walkthroughs, the client stayed informed and confident throughout the process, with no surprises upon project completion.
